Welcome to Episode 013 of Optimized Ecommerce – Maximize Your Sales With Search Bar Optimization. I’m your host for today, Tanner Larsson CEO of BGS.

BGS means Build Grow Scale! It is a community that we founded where eCommerce entrepreneurs and physical product sellers come to learn how to take their businesses to the next level.

In today’s episode, we’ll dive into how to make the most out of your search function bar with some of the cool tips that work for us and our customers. Your search bar is something that’s often easily overlooked and taken for granted. It’s time to emphasize and maximize your search bar function and get better results.

The most powerful thing you’ll get from this episode is to never lose your customers with dead-end searches, keep them in the loop of searching through your site. If you can’t provide them with direct solutions to their problems then be the bridge to help them find it. And your search bar is the key to keeping them interested and searching for answers through your site.

Here’s just a taste of what we talked about today:

Make your Search Bar Prominent

Don’t let your customers guess the location of your search function. Make it easy for them to spot it on your store and spell out the word search inside or beside the bar. Also, never use an icon for your search button. The more visible your search bar and search button is, the more people will use it.

Microtext Magic

Microtext search provides and inspires users to visit leading searches such as bestsellers, fashion, spring collection. It works like a subconscious trigger for visitors to start searching for something from your store. Program your search avoid fixing misspellings of your products and other common misspellings on your site. Do that, and it will work wonders for your store.

Hook it up with your Search to Google Analytics

Program your search bar to work with Google Analytics. Potential visitors to your site may their Google search with questions. They look for solutions to their problems, like muscle pain, toothache, weight loss, etc. This is powerful because you get to see how your customers think. This can actually help you find your store faster by presenting the information in the manner of how they think. You’re helping them find the solution or the product that they need. And if you don’t have that product, you can use your site to redirect them to what they’re looking for.

We also discussed a few other fun topics, including:

  • I mentioned a favorite search app we use for our store that’s inexpensive but works really well.
  • Whether customers buy from you or not, if you redirect them to the solution to their problems, you still made a connection.
  • No results searches should yield zero results. If they do, then the page should be optimized.

But you’ll have to watch or listen to the episode to hear about those!
